I painted outside a lot for many years all over New England. I know the landscape very well. Farmhouses, marshes,the beach, these were and continue to be among my favorite places to wander and paint. But in the last few years I have been working from memory. I think this technique allows me the freedom to improvise and it gives the work a freshness which I am unable to achieve when painting from life.
